The first day of the Chinese New Year , I spent my morning strolling at Sibu's Toa Pek Khong(at the riverside , to get some photos as I learnt that an event will be going on there.
I was surprised to see many people, mostly the Chinese folks of Sibu.
Then came this so called the God of wealth distributing the Ang Pau to those present, old and young alike rushed to him to grab the red packet which they believe will bring fortune for the new year.

Rituals are often man made. If a ritual like this can bring wealth it would soon catch up. The leaders will add to its pomp and the followers will add to its popularity.
A very rich towkay who is a follower of TPK started a fashion of bringing a small idol to the construction site with some gongs and prayers. He made money and probably lots of it. Another towkay did the same...and then the trend carries on. Another ritual.
