The Canon PhotoMarathon 2009..I was there.

That's me, Abana fondly called by my pix-buddies.I managed to fix a date for the event last saturday although I had to rush up and down.I flew in to KL late night on Friday.(Secretly haa.haa.)

I managed to captured this activity at the Sunway Lagoon.It was all fun for most of the people around here.

The Splash

For Canon user photographers were given a free general cleaning for their cameras. I don't want to miss and I managed to get 2 of my Canon SLRs cleaned like new.

The competition is on. Hey! guys take your sweet time, it's alright there's still plenty of time to go.

Not forgetting my Fish-eye lens which I frequently used during the event.

As I looked up and down I saw this lady..having bananas before the start. she doesn't seem to hurry like the rest. Cool it baby!!!!

This cap was given free apart from the Red T shirt for the participants.

World of EOS that's..my world of photography.

The registration counter kept the protocol busy all the time especially in the first 3hours.They were courteous and friendly.Canon knows how to pick the people for the job.

This is Zung(The Photoz),the most celebrated & decorated wedding photogaper. He was around to speaks on photography. That black dress was his trade-mark.( I believed).And I think he was also among the judges for the contest.

The starting and the finishing of the Marathon lies here.

Canon let no space unused..this is the sales & products counter where many canon camera products were on displayed. Those people in pink shirt are no ordinary guys, they are Canon A-Z knowledged staff.

Participants were given 3 themes for the contest.And you ve to work it out creatively by yourself. ( I did mine.)

Having a treat at a seafood restaurant in Kota Kinabalu.The menu were mostly seafood. Crabs, Prawns and fish. I must tell you that they are really fresh and taste really good.

Apart from being served with good food ,we were also entertained by cultural troupe performing typical culture dance.

This is Kota Kinabalu newly renovated International Airport and my flight back home to Sibu was expected to depart at 1355hrs. I manage to settle down at one of it's Cafe( Kopitiam ) to have my lunch.(Ooops I just had sandwiches and coffee).Looking forward to come back to Kota Kinabalu again

On the 2nd day of the Hari Raya 2009 , I was invited by my foster family to join them for a short visit to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Though I have been to Kota Kinabalu many times on official visit..nothing was like this one as this trip was meant to get my stress buzz -off , it was really an enjoyable and memorable one.

Kota Kinabalu has what you need ,the mountains, the sea,the sandy beaches and more to that was the seafood.

Master Debbie, she was the Master of the ferry we board. She is very friendly.Not just a Master she was also our responsible guide, giving us the information of the surrounding views during the cruise.

The Empire Apartment stood at 19 storeys.

Our guestroom.

We stayed at the Empire Apartment about 1/2hr walk from the city centre, as you can easily see the Skytower from our apartment 18th Floor. Our apartment was very spacious and could easily accomodate 6 people at any one time.The facilities includes a kitchen, 2bathrooms, dinning room and 2bedrooms and TV set.

We later found out that the occupants are mostly Malaysian students .

This is BritoMart transport centre likened to that of KL central where we will find buses and trains to get connection to all parts of Auckland.You can also find alot of information regarding how to get around North Island of New Zealand. The day we were there, there wasn't much crowd.

Auckland is also famous for it's establishment as education centre, we found at least 2 main universities thereby, namely Auckland university and Otago university.This is where we find alot of students especially from Asia.

Lovely Maori teenage girls.They have good command of English language. Speaking to them is no problem.
I learnt a bit on Maori language:Ka nui te hari o toku ngakau.which means I am very happy.
Kahore ahau e mohio ( I don't understand Moari.)

Young and old doesn't make any difference when making friends.

The Maoris teenagers at Papakura, about 45mins ride by train from Auckland's Bitromart transport centre.They are very curious to see us but friendly.

Light aircrafts flew above us most of the time when we were at papkura.

Very quiet and very cold, if you look at the background there are nice contour of land probably sheeps and horses farms.

On Sunday morning we decided to travel far from Auckland , so we took a train ride to Papakura (Flat-red earth) , hoping that we can see much of Auckland's outskirt. The journey time of 45mins with several station stops finally made our destination( in the southern area of Auckland.).

Its was actually a small town and a very quiet one.Perhaps it was Sunday so most shop were closed and less business activities.

Above was the Skytower which stand at the height of 573meter, located in the centre of Auckland City.Vistors could try bungy jumping here.At the ground level one can find shopping malls and restaurants.
The day (Sunday was wet throughout the evening.(See my friends getting the touch of rainwater in Auckland just to find out if it's any different from our Malaysian rainwater.)

One thing I'm most worried here was that I have to protect my two DSLR cameras from getting wet but not just that ,it's cold temperature(10degree celcious ) can knock off the power.

That Monday morning as we strolled along Queenstreet, we stumbled upon Moaris marchers chanting and war cries all of them.And we are very scared as we thought something undesirable is going to happen.
Then later we found out that the purpose was a gathering to indicate to the local government that they reject the so called formation of Supercity for Auckland which will have negative impact to the Moaris(Minority in population).It was indeed a peaceful march.

Do I look like provoking the policemen?Actually they are all friendly policemen performing their duties ensuring public safety.
I talked to one of the marcher to get first info on what's happening and she was delighted to explain from A to Z. Probably she thought that I am a foreign journalist.(hee hee).

This was our Monday morning, the weather was very cloudy and drizzling all day and we have to cancel our countryside visit. Instead we joined the march , well it was fun and we feel like Moaris .

Posing with Jack the policeman.We were actually suprised when a policeman came to approach us and asked 'Kamu Melayu?'.Later he introduced himself, who was at one time a New Zealand soldier serving in Sarawak in 1963. He mentioned of Simanggang(now Sri Aman town) where he was stationed.We were delighted and felt more comfortable.

When we travel abroad we may happen to meet nice people.And I did when I was on my flight back to Kuala Lumpur from Auckland.

Miss Ai Miyata seated next to me during the 10hrs flight was onward to Hiroshima(her hometown).She was nice and wonderful person to chat with and I felt the journey time was too short somehow rather I felt I knew her years ago.Hoping that one day we will meet again somewhere around the world.

Big catch by the fishermen , after long hours at sea.

The kids rushed to the jetty to help their fathers with the catch.

Empty fuel drums were pushed ashore for refilling. At their age they are already showing good teamwork .

The kids like their photo taken. This time around , it seems that they knew our purpose of coming to Belawai. This is probably because our previous trips so any cameramen who will vist Belawai in the future will not have problem looking for their subjects.

In the early morning our shutterbuggers were already around to take pictures.(Time and tide waits for no photographer).

Mr Chiew left early that morning as he has to catch an important meeting in Sibu. So he missed our morning photoshot at the beach in Belawai.

We had 2 models wearing Melanau traditional dress, they were staff of the Kain Songket factory.

Moving on... the photo team roam around the kampung and never get to miss any shots. Our Martin Sia once mistaken as a Kelabit by our fellow photographer.

Smoked Shrimps House

This time round we are very fortunate that we are invited to witness the demostration of how the shrimps were smoked(baked) into it's final product dried shrimps chips.(Sesar junjur in malay).

Its was really heaty inside this smoked house as all sides of the house were covered , leaving little holes for the sunlight to pierce in.

I was told that this was the most traditional method on how the dried shrimps was proccessed.And another info was that they used special kind of firewood(I couldn't remember its name) for the fire and it gives very special aroma to the shrimps.

We were all sweat when we came out from the smoked house.

Our veteran Mr Chiew was very encouraging the way he handled photography.He could not miss having a tripod when a shot is in his mind.Not forgetting Mr. Martin who have been involved in photography for many years.Ngeing and Beng beng were among others not short of photo skills.

I am very happy that they were contented of our trip to Belawai and Kuala Rajang.

Lubok Antu Trip

We came across a group of foreign tourists proceeding to a longhouse in a longboat by the river.

The river downstream from the batang Ai Hydro Dam was very clear that we could see through its bottom.

Wild fresh flowers were aboundance as we walked along the jungle track.

And we could also hear the cry of wild animals and birds flying freely in the forest. Not to mention the gushing sound of the river.

I think this is what we called ZooM Malaysia.

If not for my photographers friends, Steve & Philip , I would not have been to this beautiful serene place called Batang Ai.

Last Sunday (08Mar09) in the early dawn they fetch me from my home and out we go to Batang Ai in Lubok Antu.(closed to Indonesian borders.

We took about nearly 4hours to reach there if not less time if we do not stop to have breakfast along the way.

This was my first trip to Lubok Antu and I very glad to be there.

COASTAL KIDS- YOUNG AND EASY

Unlike the urban kids , these kids may not spend most of their time strolling around shopping complexs or entertainment outlets.

For what they can do in these small coastal villages (Kuala Rajang, Belawai) was to go to the sea side with fishing hooks or helping their parent at home.

When they saw us they were very curious yet looking forward to be acquainted.Once fraternized , they were more than happy to pose for photoshots.

When older boats needs repair , a team of the coastal village men will come together to either repair or make a new boats.This has been a usually practice here. They couldn't afford to get expensive tools so much manpower is needed.

I am impressed by the helpfulness that they had potrayed.

Recent trip to Belawai with Philip & Steve. We visited a fishing village(Belawai) and stumbled over a group of men(presumed fishermen) building a wooden fishing boat.

When I first saw the wooden structure of the boat, remind me of Noah's Ark.Can you ever imagine, one have to construct a huge boat to accommodate many animals as huge as elephants.

The first day of the Chinese New Year , I spent my morning strolling at Sibu's Toa Pek Khong(at the riverside , to get some photos as I learnt that an event will be going on there.
I was surprised to see many people, mostly the Chinese folks of Sibu.
Then came this so called the God of wealth distributing the Ang Pau to those present, old and young alike rushed to him to grab the red packet which they believe will bring fortune for the new year.

One for the Album. The Methodist Secondary school former student Class of 1975 & 1977 held their usual reunion dinner on the 27th December 2008 at the Empress Ballroom Kingwood Hotel Sibu. This time around they were honoured to have the very special guest , Dato Sri & Datin Sri Wong Soon Koh. ( Formerly ex teachers of the school).Thirty years was a very long time that many who present hardly recognise each other . Many activities were carry out during the function that eventually recall our younger days . Our aprreciation goes to Ms Tan Leh Lim and her team for their effort to make this reunion a success. I could only post some other photos without caption as I have difficulty to mention names etc. I wish all of you Happy 2009 and may good time and health be with you all.

In existence since 1991,the KL birdpark can be an ideal place for photographers who may want to get an experience in bird photography. Situated about 10mins taxi ride from KL city , one can find as many bird types as possible (from a freshwater bird to an Eagle).
Each adult may need to pay only RM15.00 per entry and it opens from 0930am to 0400pm.
It surely be a nice outing for old and young people.

When I arrived Bejaya Timesquare KL where the event was held, photographers were already crowded, leaving me little chance to position myself to get good angle on photoshooting.
There you'll see young & old and people from all walks of life displaying their photography skill. It was really thrilling .

The most anticipated model of the event, a supemodel cum actress, Miss Amber Chia .Guess many of you knew her from fashion mags and also movies. A very promising career for her. She did came to Sibu about 2years ago promoting a movie, where she acted as a girl being hypmotised by evil spirit.Well she loves acting in horror films. She also appeared for several advertisements .I can tell you she is very friendly and I was made to know that she was a Sabahan, surprisingly. When it comes to the month of August any year, we may not just get excited about the National Day but we also find other exciting events, like 'remembering late Elvis Presley'.
Globally we read or watched in TV on how people impersonate him by organising shows in August.
In Sibu we are not short of as we have our very own Elvis , He is no other than John Sia or known as John Elvis when on stage.
Last Sarturday he hold his show(Elivis & friends) brought in big crowd in one of local hotel in Sibu.
